Extended warranty in India: when dealer EW is worth it
Should you buy extended warranty on a new car in India? What EW covers, 3-year vs 5–7-year packages, accessory bundles, and when to skip the dealer quote.
Standard warranty is not the same as extended warranty
Most new cars in India come with a manufacturer warranty of about 2–3 years or a fixed km limit — whichever comes first. Extended warranty (EW) is a paid top-up, usually sold at the dealership, that stretches cover to 5, 7, or sometimes more years. You are buying peace of mind against expensive powertrain or electronics failures after the standard term ends — not a free service pack.
What EW usually covers — and what it does not
Typical EW packages cover manufacturing defects on engine, gearbox, and listed electronic modules if you follow service schedules at authorised centres. They usually exclude wear-and-tear items (clutch, brake pads, batteries, tyres), accident damage, neglect, flood damage, and failures linked to aftermarket mods or wrong fuel. Always read the exclusion list — 'comprehensive' in a brochure is not the same as comprehensive insurance.
When EW is often worth buying
EW makes more sense if you keep the car past year 3–4, drive high city km (more heat and stop-go stress on electronics), own a complex automatic (DCT/CVT) or turbo petrol with pricey sensors, or buy a brand whose out-of-warranty labour rates sting. It also helps first-time owners who cannot absorb a ₹40,000–1,50,000 surprise repair without stress.
When you can skip EW
Skip or delay if you plan to sell within 3 years (standard cover may still apply), drive low annual km on a simple naturally aspirated petrol with a strong service network, or the dealer quote is a large fraction of the car's 5-year depreciation. Some makers let you buy EW later within a window — you do not always have to decide on delivery day.
Negotiate like a cost line, not a favour
Treat EW like insurance: get OEM brochure pricing, check whether labour is included, confirm transferability if you sell, and ask how claims work outside your home city. Fold the number into your 5-year ownership model with fuel, insurance renewals, and EMI interest — not as an emotional add-on after you have already decided on the car.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy extended warranty for a new car in India?+
Buy if you will keep the car beyond standard warranty and a major repair would hurt — especially on complex automatics or electronics-heavy trims. Skip if you sell early, drive little, or the quote is padded with accessories.
Is dealer EW the same as manufacturer extended warranty?+
Often yes when it is an OEM-backed product sold through the dealer. Some third-party plans exist — check who pays claims and whether authorised service is required. Prefer OEM documentation over verbal promises.
Does extended warranty cover clutch, battery, and AC gas?+
Usually no — those are treated as consumables or wear items. Confirm the schedule of covered parts; do not assume 'full car' cover.
Can I buy EW after delivery?+
Many brands allow purchase within a fixed period or before a km limit while the car is still under standard warranty and serviced on schedule. Ask the brand portal or dealer for the last eligible date before you refuse on delivery day.
Dzire / Seltos dealers pushed EW with accessories — normal?+
Common upsell pattern. Separate the EW price from coatings, mats, and audio. Pay for EW only if the standalone terms look fair; refuse bundled junk you do not want.
