Mahindra

Thar 3-Door

The legendary 3-door Thar is India's default lifestyle off-roader, featuring shift-on-the-fly 4WD, high ground clearance, and an imposing stance. RWD variants lower the entry price for urban buyers.

What owners say

Aggregated themes from hundreds of discussions across Reddit, Team-BHP, and direct owner reports.

Off-road Heroics

Go-anywhere capability and massive ground clearance make it a blast for off-road excursions and weekend trails.

Tarmac Comfort

The cabin is bumpy and passenger comfort is poor for long highway trips due to ladder-frame suspension.

Rear Seat Access

3-door layout makes ingress to the rear seats extremely awkward, but kids don't mind it.

Excellent fuel economy and punchy performance. The cabin is surprisingly quiet for a diesel, they have done a fantastic job with NVH levels. Suspension is perfect for bad Indian roads.

The engine refinement is top-notch and features are great, but the 3-cylinder thrum at lower RPMs is slightly noticeable. Mileage is highly sensitive to throttle inputs (9 to 15 km/l).

Really love the strong petrol and diesel engine options on the Thar 3-Door. It makes the daily ownership experience so much better. Highly recommend it!

The petrol turbo engine has got genuine punch. The MT transmission shifts are lightning-quick and smooth. Extremely fun to drive on open highway stretches.

The biggest issue is the bumpy, ladder-frame ride quality on tarmac. It gets really annoying in daily usage and makes me regret not looking at other segment options.

Wheelbase (2,450 mm)

On the Thar 3-Door, the wheelbase is 50 mm shorter than the segment median. Rear legroom is tighter — best if back-seat use is occasional. A longer wheelbase also reduces pitch over potholes and speed breakers.

Automobile Literacy

Jargon-Free Safety & Tech

What all those complex brochure codes actually mean in plain, practical terms.

ESC (Electronic Stability Control) & VSM

Emergency Anti-Skid. If the vehicle senses a loss of traction (like on wet mud or when swerving to avoid an obstacle), it automatically applies brakes to individual wheels to keep you on your steered path. Essential for safety.

HAC (Hill-start Assist Control)

Roll-back Prevention. When starting the vehicle on a steep slope (like a flyover or basement mall ramp), it holds the brakes for 2 seconds after you release the pedal, giving you time to move your foot to the accelerator.

6 SRS Airbags (Standard)

Full-Cabin Cushioning. Protects all occupants in case of an impact. Includes two front airbags, two seat-mounted side airbags, and two curtain airbags that shield front and rear passengers' heads from side window impacts.

All-Wheel Disc Brakes

Consistent Stopping Power. Unlike drum brakes, disc brakes dissipate heat quickly, preventing brake fade. They stop the vehicle shorter, more predictably, and with far less foot pressure.

Star Map LED DRLs & Headlamps

Advanced Night Vision. LEDs throw a much whiter, wider, and brighter beam than yellow halogens, reducing eye fatigue during night highway runs. Star Map running lights make you highly visible to oncoming traffic.

Petrol or diesel — which pays back?

Diesel often costs more to buy, but less to run. This shows how far you need to drive before fuel savings cover that extra purchase price — in plain numbers for your city.

How much you drive
12k km/yr

Extra you pay upfront

₹0.58L

E Diesel diesel costs about ₹0.58L more than E petrol before you drive a kilometre.

Fuel cost each km

₹6.1 vs ₹8.6

Diesel ≈ ₹6.1/km · petrol ≈ ₹8.6/km in Hyderabad — you save about ₹2.5 every kilometre on diesel. ~ preview

When you recover it

23k km

If you drive about 12k km a year, fuel savings cover the extra price after roughly 1.9 years (23k km total).

Bottom line: at your usage, Creta diesel should pay for its higher purchase price in under 5 years — so diesel is a sensible pick if you keep the car that long.
